11 Fantastic Uses for Coconut Oil

coconut.jpg

Coconuts are absolutely wonderful for pretty much everything in life! They make coconut water, coconut butter, coconut milk, coconut sugar, are edible, and make fabulous bikini tops. The most versatile aspect of coconuts is the oil they produce. Coconut oil is a miracle worker with hundreds of uses from cooking to eye make-up remover. In Asia and the Pacific, they use it for food as well as medicine. Places where citizens consume a lot of coconut oil like Polynesia and Sri Lanka have significantly low rates of heart disease and cancer. Here are 11 fantastic uses for coconut oil:

BODY LOTION This oil makes a wonderful body lotion that nourishes, deeply moisturizes and hydrates your skin like no other. It also gives your skin a nice shine – great for a hitting a night on the town or feeling you’re on the cat walk. Meow! Most lotions are full of toxic chemicals, petroleum-based ingredients, fragrances and dyes that travel through your pores, enter your bloodstream and are free to roam your body. Not cute.

DISEASE It nourishes the heart with good cholesterol and lowers bad cholesterol. Furthermore, “It also lessens heart disease as shown by studies performed on inhabitants of the Pacific Islands where their entire caloric intake included 30% to 60% from fully saturated coconut oil. These people were discovered to be free of cardiovascular disease.” *

ENERGY & WEIGHT LOSS Since it is a medium chain fatty acid, it goes straight to the liver for digestion where it is turned into energy, increasing metabolism and adding mores spring to your step!

COOKING Coconut oil is the only oil that does not turn carcinogenic when cooked at high temperatures. Most oils cooked at high temperatures become unstable as their bonds break apart and become carcinogenic. Coconut oil, on the other hand, is stable and does not break down easily at higher temperatures. Also, it gives your food a very mild nutty flavor.

BAKING Makes a great oil substitute in baking recipes and brings out a really nice flavor. Bruce Fife wrote an excellent book, The Coconut Oil Miracle and talks all about coconut oil and gives some fabulous recipes like this one. Here’s a sneak peak of one of his recipes

HAIR MASK Locks look a little dull, lackluster or dry? Smother coconut oil in your hair and let it sit for at least an hour before rinsing out. Coconut oil locks in a deep moisture and repairs your hair. Even better…sleep with it in your hair and rinse in the AM. (you might want to put a towel on your pillow if you do this)

EYE MAKE-UP REMOVER Nix your OTC makeup removers ASAP! They are full of chemicals that are no bueno for you and actually break down collagen bonds in your skin. Instead, put a little bit of coconut oil on a cotton ball and gently wipe away. This works like a charm!

TURNS BACK THE AGING CLOCK When it comes to aging, its best to proactive about our skin rather than wait for signs to appear. Coconut oil to the rescue! It gives your deep moisture to prevent cracks from happening, promotes collagen production, heals wounds and scars, evens skin tone, helps treat exzema, and much more. I highly recommend applying some before bed and upon rising in the morning. A little bit goes a long way, so use sparingly. While it may be a bit greasy at first, it absorbs quickly into skin.

ANTI-EVERYTHING BAD! Coconut oil is anti-fungal, anti-microbial, and anti-viral. It has been proven to cure all kinds of diseases (in minor cases) and is great at easing flu symptoms, healing infections, killing viruses, parasites and other pathogens. It also helps relieve kidney problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, and kills candida. Take a teaspoon every morning, or add some to your AM smoothie or coffee to reap these awesome benefits.

RELIEVES DANDRUFF If you’re battling dandruff problems, it may really be a fungal infection. Before showering, massage coconut oil into your scalp and leave on for 30 minutes before washing out. Also, take a teaspoon every morning and fast for 2 hours. Keep doing this until your dandruff disappears.

GUM HEALTH Having dental issues? Nothing coconut oil cant help. Most dental issues are due to infections, and coconut oil is a miracle worker for oral health. It has been proven to  kill bacteria, infections, pathogens, gingivitis, relieve pains, and other issues.Make your own toothpaste by mixing equal parts coconut oil with baking soda, and mint or vanilla extract to add some flavor. BONUS: IT NATURALLY WHITENS YOUR TEETH!

Clearly, coconut oil is a miracle. There is not a single part of your body that it is bad for. For awesomely radiant health, consume at least 1 tsp. everyday, as well as lathering up in it. Its $10 for a jar and lasts you FOREVER! Ok, maybe not forever, but my jars last me 4-5 months. I scoop half of it out into a BPA free Tupperware container to keep in my room for external uses, while I keep the other jarred half in my kitchen for cooking.  You can find jars of coconut oil in most grocery stores, as well on Amazon. Be sure to get a kind that is organic, cold-pressed, and extra virgin. (less processed and more nutrient dense).

Eat What You Love the Healthiest Way Possible

We all know how hard it is to resist eating that scrumptious looking pasta at the dinner table or those dangerous brownies in the office kitchen. When we digest food, your body has to produce unique enzymes to break down particular substances, i.e. amylase breaks down starches, protease breaks down protein, and lipase breaks down fat.

One of the main reasons people get food babies and feel comatose after consuming too much and/or unhealthy food is because the amount of energy it takes for your body to produce these enzymes to digest these particular food materials. When you eat too much, your body goes into overdrive to produce additional enzymes which can rob you of your natural energy. SO, to optimize digestion without zapping your energy (whether you’re on a diet, cleanse, trying to eat healthier, etc.), there are some vital things I highly recommend you do during times where not-so-healthy food is consumed.

Before your meals, you should…..

  • Consume leafy greens before every meal where starch, protein, and fat are involved. Leafy greens are loaded with enzymes that can help break down food, so it is super important to eat these first so that your digestive tract already has these enzymes in it, ready to tackle those hard to break down foods about to enter. Also, leafy greens help keep our body more alkaline which is vital for optimal health. Breads, animal proteins, sugars and fats are very acidic to your body and having the greens in your system first will form an alkaline buffer against the acidic foods and will protect your tissues. The healthier your tissues, the healthier your skin, hair, nails, energy – EVERYTHING!

  • Raw, unpasteurized cabbage. Whether fermented or not, cabbage is packed with enzymes that also do wonders for metabolism. When fermented, they produce additional pro-biotics which are AWWESSOMMMEEE for your digestive tract. The key here is to eat it before you eat your meals. Buffet lovers – this one will be your best friend.
  • Ps. If the eating greens and cabbage before your meals isn’t making sense- think of how you’re supposed to eat bread or something filling before a night out of drinking. The same idea of coating your stomach also applies to eating – greens and cabbage must come first!
  • Digestive enzyme supplements. You can find these in health food stores and most regular stores as well. Be sure to get ones that have amylase, protease, and lipase. Take before your meal so you digest better ;)

After your meals, it is ideal to consume…

  • Peppermint tea, ginger, lemon, and/or cayenne pepper. These all to help speed up digestion and relieve food babies and comas. Cayenne pepper especially will help speed up metabolism and give you an energy kick. Even better, mix all 4 into a tea for a powerful metabolism tonic.

The most important thing to keep in mind here is that the healthier your terrain, the easier and faster your metabolism. The less energy spent on digestion, the more energy your body will use to repair your tissues for clearer skin, brighter eyes, stronger hair, improved moods and an overall healthier body!

Health and Beauty Secrets from My Travels: Part 1

papaya

While in Southeast Asia this summer, I was exposed to some out-of-this-world delicious food. Not only was it delicious, it was also mostly healthy, colorful (i.e. lots of veggies and fruit!!!), had no preservatives, and was so fresh and freshly made to order. The asian culture all have very beautiful hair, lean bodies, clear skin, youthful appearances, and lower rates of cancer. We pay big bucks over here to achieve these things, so I of course had to observe their daily practices and consumption to get their secrets and I would love to share some things that I picked up while there.

Reasonable portion sizes. All of the meals were served in perfect portion sizes and always leave you satisfied, but never full. In other words, no digestive burden or overload. They probably have no clue what a food baby feels like! And remember, the less time our body spends on digestion, the more time it has to repair our skin, hair, nails, adhesions, ailments, etc. which makes us healthier, more alert, and glowing.

They like to spice it up! So so much spicy food, my taste buds were doing gymnastics. Most of the soups had a dash of spicy, while the other meals had slices of Thai Peppers on the side for you to add to your liking. Thai peppers are really small, but boy are they HOT! Spicy food revs up metabolism BIG TIME, kills parasites, increases circulation and alkalizes your body so pathogens have a hard time living – a MUST for traveling to foreign countries!

Green papaya salad. A very common Thai dish, green papaya is a fruit that grows in Thailand and is served usually in strips that resembles pasta and has the consistency of a cucumber but much crunchier. It pretty much tastes like heaven and is amazing for you. It is loaded with enzymes that help aid in digestion, is good for colon health, combats parasites and bacteria, is excellent for heart health and dissolves plaque from arteries, and is an excellent source of potassium and magnesium, as well as Vitamins A, C, E, and B. Its a miracle. Unfortunately its hard to find in the states, but you can buy Green Papaya Powder online. :)

Papaya on your face. This time Im talking about the orange papaya. Mash some up and use a face mask. Also a great excuse for a food fight. It has loads of vitamin A and is great for preventing aging and promoting collagen production, evens skin tone, prevents pimples and blackheads, and can erase age spots and stubborn blemishes. Its also very healing and can be applied to cuts, sores, dry skin, cracked heels, calluses, etc.

I hope you like these tips, I will share more later! And remember, natures way is the way to go!
