Sulfur: A Beautiful, Underrated Nutrient


Sulfur is one of the major minerals found in key structural components in the body. Some of these structures include your beauty BFF’s collagen and keratin, which are found in your skin, hair, and nails BFF’s. It is found in all of the body’s connective tissue to support and connect our organs. Sulfur also detoxifies the body (we all need some of that!), facilitates healing of scars and wounds, and regulates acid-base balance to keep pH levels around the recommended 7.0.

Sources of sulfur come from essential nutrients like thiamin, pantothenic acid and biotin, as well as the amino acids cysteine and methionine. Sulfur determines the structure and folding of protein molecules and promotes the stability of these protein structures. In rigid proteins like collagen and keratin, sulfur forms disulfide bonds which keep proteins strong and helpsĀ  maintain the protein’s shape. This leads to stronger, thicker locks; supple, age-resistant skin; and strong, faster growing nails. Ever thought about how perms or chemical hair straightening systems work? The disulfide bonds that connect and give hair its structure are broken, the straightening or perm iron is applied, and the disulfide bonds are then reconnected. Cool huh?

The less disulfide bonds present, the less collagen and keratin our bodies make, and the less firm our hair, skin, and nails will be. So ladies, if you want to turn your beauty routines up a notch, get your hands on some sulfur for some radiant health.

We get sulfur by eating it directly in food, creating it with methionine and cysteine from proteins, and absorbing it through our skin. Here are 3 awesome ways to incorporate more sulfur into your daily regime.


Did you know the Ancient Romans took sulfuric baths to prevent aging and pain? In a hot bath, pour in two cups of Epsom Salt (less than 3 bucks!) and soak in this beauty elixir for 30 minutes, 2-3 times a week. Epsom salt contains magnesium and sulfur which can be absorbed through our pores when we bath in it. Add some lavender or vanilla drops in your bath if you’d prefer a spa-like essence.


Diets high in protein provide sufficient levels of cysteine and methionine – which help build sulfur compounds. Sulfur has no RDA or Upper Limit for consuming too much, so supplements can be safely taken as well. MSM, short for methyl-sulfonyl-methane, is an organic sulfur compound that can be purchased at health-food and vitamin stores for less than $15. Here’s what I take…

Sulfur can be found in dairy, meat, fish, nuts, soybeans, spirulina, and most raw fruits and veggies, especially leafy greens. Oh, and it’s also in beer and wine. Cheers to that!
